Outer Carrier/ Bulletproof Vest Grant
Officers today carry more equipment on their duty belt than ever before, averaging more than 20 pounds, and all of it is carried around the waist and on the hips. Lower back injuries are a leading cause of both short-term and permanent disability for officers. After research was conducted by the Risk Management team, PERMA began a pilot project to determine if an outer carrier would reduce both the number and cost of lower back claims. The outer carrier allows equipment to be put higher on the body, up on the chest. As a result, weight is removed from the hip and lower back areas, and discomfort caused by the duty belt while seated in a patrol vehicle is reduced.
The grant provides financial assistance to members who are interested in transitioning – or replacing – outer carriers by reimbursing 50% of the cost of new body armor and outer carriers, up to a maximum of $5,000 per agency.
- To date, we have subsidized the purchase of 297 bulletproof vests and 428 outer carriers for 57 members.
- This totals over $150,000 funds to those members!
